In recent years, IVC filter lawsuits have been filed claiming negligence in the design of the medical device. If you have reason to believe you were given a faulty IVC filter you may be entitled to compensation for any medical bills, corrective surgeries or pain you’ve experienced.
An IVC filter is a small metal device that catches large clot fragments and keeps them from going through the inferior vena cava (IVC) vein to the heart and lungs. The filter is placed inside your artery.
An IVC filter is made for people who have a high risk of blood clotting and can’t take medications. If a clot fragment reaches the heart or lungs it could cause pain, breathing complications or even death.
The placement of an IVC filter is an image-guided procedure, using ultrasound and/or x-rays, which inserts the filtering device inside the large vein in the abdomen that returns blood from the lower body to the heart. This vein is known as the inferior vena cava. The device will be inserted through a small incision at the site.
Due to the nature of the surgery there is a chance of bruising and bleeding where the incision was made. There is also risk of the IVC filter straying into the wrong spot or penetrating through the vein. It’s possible for the filter to break, causing small pieces to travel to heart or lungs.
If the IVC filter should move or break inside the vein for any reason the patient may experience these symptoms:
Complications are a natural risk with any type of surgery, however if the problem is due to a faulty device then the blame may lie with the manufacturers or the designers of the product.
If you’re complication was directly caused by an IVC filter then you may have reason to take legal action.
